The Gun Report: March 29, 2013
There was a lot of gun news yesterday. An inventory of Adam Lanzaa possessions was released by police. According to the Times, they included several firearms, more than 1,600 rounds of ammunition, 11 knives, a starter pistol, a bayonet, 3 samurai swords, as well as photographs of what appeared to be a corpse smeared in blood and covered in plastic, as well as a newspaper clipping that chronicled a vicious shooting at Northern Illinois University.
President Obama and Vice President Biden met with a group called Mothers Demand Action, and a frustrated president urged Congress to pass legislation to curb gun violence. Shame on us if weve forgotten, he said, 100 days after the Newtown massacre. At another Mothers Demand Action rally, several men showed up carrying loaded assault rifles, just because, you know, they could.
But to my mind, the most haunting news yesterday was the Times account, based on the release of thousands of pages of documents, of the interaction between Jared Loughner and his parents in the days and weeks prior to his shooting of Gabby Giffords and two dozen others in Tuscon, Ariz., in 2011. Reading of the fears of his increasingly distraught parents, their futile efforts to persuade their 22-year-old son to get help, and their ultimately unsuccessful attempt to keep him away from guns is chilling, sad and unforgettable. The Times has posted a number of the documents here.
