While browsing a search on *gun control* I found a a referance to
NYC sending out a letter to registered gun owners demanding that they surrender any rifle or shotgun that accepts more than 5 rounds. It's on every right wing site: The Blaze, Breitbart, Ammo land, Truthaboutguns and a host of others. Most of them citing each other for the source of the item. I did a google for news on *new york letter surrender guns* and found nothing from main stream media but a repeat of all the RW gun sites. It appears they feed off themselves, like a snake eating its own tail.
Anybody out there see anything about this? NYC did pass the SAFE act that I think limits magazines to 5 rounds but I thought the existing stuff was grandfathered.
The paranoia of gun nuts is amazing. The UN passes an arms treaty to regulate sales of military gear across national borders and they all immediately think "They're coming to take my guns!"

(68,269 posts)It's the sort of chronic, unfocussed, irrational fear pukers have that's right up there with black man 'stealing' "their" white women.
As if anyone would want to have anything to do with some sub-moronic, stringy-haired female right-winger...

(14,559 posts)I was the model of politeness and bit my tongue (chewed my nails?) over the spittle flying replies to my posts. All I got was insults to my intelligence and integrity. I saw recently that they were rather proud of "defeating" those of us who try to engage them and running us off their territory.
So, no, I'll not be posting this over there.

(725 posts)Not because I agree with you (I don't) but because I detest censorship. If it's not illegal or horrifying (kiddie porn, animal abuse, etc) then it should be free to be expressed. DUers need to grow the fuck up and stop trying win debate by shutting up opponents.
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Tue Dec 30, 2014, 03:19 PM, and the Jury voted 2-5 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Hyperbole is not a mortal sin.
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Agree with alerter's comment but oppose censorship. DUers need to stop shutting each other down and just let the fur fly in open debate.
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: I'm not a Gungeon fan, either, but there are those who advocate for their Second Amendment rights without dragging their knuckles, as well as others who hang around and make the opposite case.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Just substitute âemployeeâ to supporter and everything will be fine..
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE

Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

(6,641 posts)is to alert on any and all posts which expose their right-wing leanings. Thanks for your "charity," but I really didn't need it. I am more than willing to take a righteous hide for expressing the truth about those who aid and abet the NRA by spreading lies and misinformation about boogeymen political grabbers "coming to take our guns," in order to sell more guns through the use of fear.
It's all made up Gun Fetish bullshit, and real people die -- not because there are too many guns, but because there are too many gun nuts who wrap themselves in the flag, and hide behind a convoluted right-wing SCOTUS interpretation of the Second Amendment. Guns in the hands of the general public are a serious public health menace, serve no utilitarian purpose but to kill, and should be regulated as such. Thanks to the NRA and its proponents, all guns in the possession of criminals and psychopaths entered the market legally at some point.

(14,559 posts)So it isn't five rounds, it's ten. Still I haven't seen any headlines about a letter going out to gun owners demanding the guns be turned in. Perhaps when the time for registration renewal comes around the gun owner will have to show that they are in compliance with the law, ya' know be a law abiding citizen?
I know that CT sent out letters telling gun owners to comply with the assault weapons registration or face discipline but the NYC thing was news to me.

(6,641 posts)applies to individual "guns," but only magazines whose capacity is more than 10 rounds.

(16,305 posts)I don't know what came of it, but the city sent that notice because of their local law, not because of the SAFE Act.
Once you get out of NYC and into up state NY, the gun laws are more lenient.

(1,415 posts)than in Texas. $95 for the license and fingerprinting, a couple of references and that's it. No class, no training, no restrictions.

(9,951 posts)but the opposite is actually true, it's NYC that's anti-gun, the rest of NY is pretty 2A friendly.

I found this from fox, for what it's worth, & they claim it only affects 500 rifles/sgs, & is in violation of a 2010 ordinance, so maybe not safe act involved:
The New York City Police Department is taking aim at owners of shotguns and rifles capable of holding more than five rounds, demanding such guns be surrendered, altered or taken out of the city.
The demand came in the form of some 500 letters mailed out to owners of registered long guns that are in violation of a 2010 city ordinance. The first option for the letter's recipient is to, "Immediately surrender your Rifle and/or Shotgun to your local police precinct, and notify this office of the invoice number. The firearm may be sold or permanently removed from the City of New York thereafter."
The notices, mailed Nov. 18, also give owners the options of demonstrating the gun has been moved out of NYPD jurisdiction or modified by a licensed gunsmith to comply with the law.
Although an NYPD spokeswoman told FoxNews.com the law has been on the books since 2010, critics say this year is the first time the notices were so widely dispersed. The notice was first reported on the website TheTruthAboutGuns.com.

is tedisco a truth bender????: Though these notices were not sent out as a direct result of the SAFE Act, New York State Assemblyman James Tedisco said the new law may embolden city police forces to send out similar letters. Tedisco, who voted against the SAFE Act, said New York City had the five-round law in the books for about 20 years, but this is the first time he has heard complaints about the notices being sent out to gun owners.
