Florida: Guns, guns and more guns

The Florida Legislature is in Session: That must mean there are lots of gun bills swirling around.

It's true.

Lawmakers are considering allowing college students to carry concealed weapons on campus.

Florida leaders are also contemplating arming public school personnel to help protect kids.

And in the event of a hurricane-based evacuation, lawmakers want to makes sure gun owners without a license to carry a concealed weapon are able to pack up their arms during said evacuation.

OK, is that it? Did I cover everything?

(snip)

Remember what happens in college? Students get drunk. All the time. They are crammed into tiny breadbox dorm rooms. And the cost of college tuition, books and beer are putting more and more students into long-term debt. Adding firearms to the mix could be a bad thing.

Florida concealed guns debate continues to divide college campuses

On the list of recent college shootings across the US, Florida State University is particularly prominent. In 2011, sophomore Ashley Cowie was shot dead by a student who was showing off an assault rifle at an off-campus party. Last November, a mentally ill gunman wounded three people, paralysing one, before police shot and killed him in the university’s main library.

So it comes as little surprise that FSU, just yards from the state legislature in Tallahassee, has become a de facto arena for the battle between opponents and supporters of proposed legislation that would allow concealed handguns to be carried on Florida campuses.

Is there any gun bill our legislators won't pass?

There is no gun bill the Florida Legislature won’t pass.

I’m serious.

They are so gun crazed, anything with the word “guns” in the bill gets passed.

The latest involves guns in schools.

Call me crazy – many have – but I don’t think guns belong anywhere near schools.

And I don’t think the answer to school shootings is to have MORE guns.

Obviously I would make a horrible Florida legislator.

In addition to the bills that would allow concealed weapons on state college campuses, another bill being considered would allow a school superintendent to appoint public school staffers to carry concealed weapons.

This is insanity.

It’s also the way the Florida Legislature does business.
