Went to an organizational meeting for a new chapter of MDA today.

There were 15 in attendance and they represented four suicides, three murders and an equal number of Sandy Hook PTSD victims. We keep asking if THIS shooting will be the tipping point but I know in my heart that December 14, 2012 is the day things really changed.

That organization is growing rapidly. A year ago there was one chapter for N Texas. Now the DFW metroplex has four chapters.

The agenda is simple; write letters to congress, send emails to congress, phone congress and generally make a concerted effort to let congress know we exist and are not going away. Further immediate goals are to get Universal Background Checks, promote gun safety in the home, support reasonable limits on where loaded guns can be carried, create enforceable laws to curb gun trafficking and straw purchases. I see nothing in this that should be opposed by even the most ardent gun rights advocate.

As regards gun safety in the home we hope to make presentations at PTA meetings and educate parents about gun safes, trigger locks and other methods of keeping children safe from the home defense firearm. Again, something that even the most ardent gun rights advocates should support.

Join us, it's important and lives are at stake.

But these all seem like reasonable and laudable goals to me. Though the "reasonable limits on where loaded guns can be carried" seems a bit vague. Any more gloss you can add?

One program I certainly could support is gun safety/education.

conversation and the snark isn't necessary.

How about passing laws like reporting of stolen guns immediately and limiting the number of guns/month? Both make gun trafficking more difficult. If a trafficker can only buy one pistol a month it's hard to make any money hanging out in Texas for six month to buy guns for Chicago. It's also hard to tell police that you've had a dozen guns stolen in the last year without generating some suspicion.

Neither is an infraction of the 2nd Amendment. At worst they are a minor inconvenience.

Can you get behind those regulations?

...I really like the focus on gun security and straw purchases/illegal street sales. Both of these are areas in which progress can be readily made and upon which there is a pretty broad general consensus (that includes most gun owners).

If we don't have dialogue, we're not going to get closer to the outcome most everyone wants: a reduction in gun-related violence.

Or accused you of wanting to force guns onto everyone? Or questioned your integrity? Or resorted to outright belligerence? Or flatly refused to even discuss something with you?

I was discussing the idea of honest discussion of a problem and what to do about it.

This is one of the most contentious issues in American politics and has been for years. In my experience (which I think I can legitimately say is considerable), online gun control conversations tend to get heated at the drop of a hat, and most forums that attempt them rapidly become useless. They either degenerate into pointless, infantile flame-fests, or in a moderated forum like this one or GC&RKBA, rapidly become one-sided when the minority side gets pushed out. Neither of those outcomes helps solve the problem.

What I, and some others here, hope to achieve is raising awareness of the size and scope of the issue as well as some of the possible solutions.

Simply railing against guns is pointless and counter productive. Presenting ideas and talking about how and why they might make a difference and then soliciting support for those ideas is what GCRA is about. Unfortunately that can't happen if the perpetual noise machine that is the Gungeon moves here. That's what lead to the banning of so many of the regulars who make so much noise nothing else can be heard.

It's a shame because people who know about guns should have the same goals GCRA does.

This

Our SOP was crafted to encourage honest discussion and action to stem gun violence within the common Democratic framework:

Discuss how to enact progressive gun control reform in a supportive environment. The group serves as a safe haven in which to mobilize supporters in support of measures reducing gun violence by changing laws, culture and practice at the municipal, state, and federal levels. While there is no single solution to the tragic epidemic of gun violence, members agree that more guns are not the solution to gun violence, and are expected to be supportive of the policies of progressive gun control reform organizations.
