The Draft Campaign Elizabeth Warren Didn’t Ask For But Hasn’t Killed

The Draft Campaign Elizabeth Warren Didn’t Ask For But Hasn’t Killed
12/22/14

Elizabeth Warren isn’t running for president. But the senator’s electromagnetic pull has produced a sprawling, complicated draft effort that could define the progressive movement — and prove rewarding or risky for Warren.

...“No, no, no, no, no.”

But three weeks ago, when organizers from MoveOn.org, the largest progressive group in the country, contacted Warren’s office to let her staff know about their plan, the reply they received was neutral and dispassionate, taking some activists by surprise.

“When we gave them a heads up, they said ‘thanks’ and ‘we’ve appreciated the work we’ve done together in the Senate,’” said Ben Wikler, MoveOn’s Washington director.

The organization was about to launch a campaign to convince Warren to run for president. MoveOn officials expected support from the majority of their members — there are 8 million spread across every state, county, and zip code. And they intended to spend at least $1 million on the effort, opening offices and hiring staff in New Hampshire and Iowa, the states that begin the presidential nominating process every four years.

After MoveOn announced the project, Warren reverted to her go-to line. A spokesperson reiterated Warren’s pledge to serve a full Senate term. And her staff circulated audio from an event in Boston, where Warren told reporters again that, no, she isn’t running.

Still, organizers working on the campaign to draft Warren — who has become an avatar of the party’s progressive flank — found it significant that she didn’t go further.

“The response was just ‘OK,’ not a statement up or down,” said one progressive operative involved in the campaign. “If Warren or her team had been dead set against a draft from a big movement player like MoveOn, there was an easy way to make that clear.”

“It would have stopped it dead,” this person said. “MoveOn would not have done it.”

I've heard right here that she absolutely is NOT going to run, that she'd said so many times, that running now would be abandoning the Mass voters who elected her making her a quitter no better than Sarah Palin, not to mention a liar and hypocrite who had the unmitigated gall to change her mind, or be coy, or something awful. Oh, and she used to vote Republican at the same time Republicans were doing awful things and must still hold some Republican-like ideas. And anyone who backs her is a purist.

Fuck the naysayers. Run, Elizabeth, Run!!!!!!!!!

No one is, it's still early. I find it interesting she didn't just say NO through her staff when they contacted her and told them what they were doing.

The debate for our party's 'soul' needs to be dragged back to where it should be, and a Warren candidacy will accomplish that, if nothing else.

gives her power. Whatever she works on we will be there to support her. That is true of Bernie also. The Senators and Representatives who stand up for us need this kind of support to be able to do that. I think we can count on one hand the number of leaders we give this much attention to.

Even in my state where we have very good Senators (Franken and Klobuchar) the support is not like this.

FDR asked Democrats to "make me do it". I think this is what he meant. Finally we are getting it.

rather humble circumstances.

She has moved up on a wave of serendipity, on a seeming momentum of fate or maybe of a higher force.

I know it sounds crazy, but given her background, you would never have predicted that she could have risen to her place in society.

She is riding on something bigger than her own will.

Sounds crazy, but read her book.

She criticizes our system and its failings but she is in her most profound, deepest being an optimist, a very positive person who says "Yes" to responsibility, to what is right and to America when called on.

I believe that if we raise the momentum for her candidacy, she will run and run hard.

This is what I think as well, just from listening to her in interviews. And its why she's seeing what MoveOn can do, how involved people will be. Because this is the ONLY thing, a strong grassroots movement, that will beat the multi-million$ already raised by Clinton's sponsors.

I've only read about her book, excerpts, but I'll download it tonight on my Kindle. Thanks for the recommendation!

Charlie Pierce is a good friend of hers and is convinced she will not run. That being said, I'm sure she wants to help all she can to get a groundswell populist movement that may ignite another progressive like O'Malley. I'd say Bernie Sanders but some people can't get past the S word. I have no issue with it but I fear there aren't enough of us.

Elizabeth Warren is more charismatic than the male candidates. It's time for a woman to be president. Elizabeth Warren will run if we pressure her enough. She needs a running mate, an ally who is strong in foreign policy.

Elizabeth Warren is the only potential candidate who really knows where the bodies are buried when it comes to financial reforms that will save our middle class -- the only one. Her work on the financial struggles of the middle class place her far above any other candidate. There are lots of great liberals out there. None of them understand what is wrong with our economy like Elizabeth Warren does.

That is why i say the country needs Elizabeth Warren. I notice that a lot of men are cautioning that she does not want to run. The history of female candidates for the presidency is rather discouraging for women. But Elizabeth Warren is the one to break through that sexist ceiling and win the presidency.

O'Malley -- just another boring candidate.
