(France) Twitter hands over data on anti-Semitic tweeters (x-post from GD)

Twitter hands over data on anti-Semitic tweeters

Social network giant Twitter announced on Friday that it had handed over information to French authorities to help identify the authors of a anti-Semitic tweets, after a landmark court ruling ordered the company to pass on the data.

Twitter has handed over data to French authorities to help identify the authors of anti-Semitic tweets following a complaint from a Jewish students' group, AFP reported on Friday.

Twitter said in a statement that it had given information to judicial authorities "enabling the identification of some authors" of anti-Semitic tweets..

A French court in January ordered the company to provide the data after the complaint from France's Union of Jewish Students (UEJF).

The ruling followed a legal complaint lodged in October by UEJF which argued that numerous tweets had breached French law prohibiting incitement to racial hatred.

There appears to be a slight indication of a recurrence of anti-Jewish feeling in Europe. Really, all around anti-Semitism hasn't gone away as the many immigrants to Europe from Turkey and Northern Africa have been targeted by bigots for a long time.

But a very right-wing party also obtained a lot of power in Hungary maybe last year.

Americans have difficulty comprehending the anti-semitism and anti-Jewish in particular traditions in Europe. We don't think of our right-wingers, extreme as they are, as being anti-Jewish. But all over the world these sentiments exist, inexplicably from the American view, but they do exist.

Thanks for posting this. It is an issue that needs to be watched.

Anti-semitism including anti-Jewish sentiments in Europe is like Southern Jim Crow in the US. It isn't allowed to show its ugly face, but it lurks beneath the surface in some regions and in some individuals.
