Philippines: Aquino administration, MILF take step closer to peace with wealth-sharing deal

MANILA, Philippines — Two down, two to go.

The Aquino administration took a step closer to sealing a final peace deal with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) after government negotiators and their MILF counterparts signed the wealth-sharing annex of the Framework Agreement on the Bangsamoro (FAB) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in the first hour of Sunday (July 14).

After failing to reach an agreement in the first five days of the negotiations, representatives of both panels came to terms at the close of the six-day 38th round of formal peace talks.

Regarded as the most contentious of the four annexes of the FAB, the wealth-sharing annex is vital in the crafting of the basic law that would give birth to Bangsamoro, a quasi-state to replace the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

“The Negotiating Panels of the Government of the Philippines and the (MILF) today closed the 38th round of Exploratory Talks in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with the signing of the Annex on Wealth Sharing to the (FAB),” the MILF and government peace panels said in a joint statement issued on Sunday.
