Delicate expressions of love

Studio Ghibli’s latest film, “Omoide no Marnie” (When Marnie Was There), has the capacity to make the audience believe in the power of love thanks to the delicate, meticulously layered expressions that are portrayed one after another.

Marnie is the second feature-length anime film by director Hiromasa Yonebayashi, following his 2010 effort “Karigurashi no Arrietty,” released as “The Borrower Arrietty” in Britain and “The Secret World of Arrietty” in the United States.

The film is an adaptation of “When Marnie Was There,” a children’s book masterpiece by British writer Joan G. Robinson.

Set in Hokkaido one summer, the film depicts how a foster child, who embraces her solitude and isolation, grows through her encounter with a mysterious girl.
