This was the best film from beginning to end that I’ve seen this year. Mikey Madison, who plays the title role, was extraordinary in her part as a NYC sex worker who gets involved with a Russian oligarch’s son. That’s all I’ll say as to not give out spoilers. There’s plenty of sex, but it’s integral to the narrative, and it’s one of the best cast films in many a moon. It’s funny, raw, surprising and ultimately compassionate. I’ve enjoyed all of Sean Baker’s films, but I think this is his best effort yet. It deserved winning the Cannes Film Festival grand prize.

(22,096 posts)This film completely passed me by. But that's been true of a lot of movies since Covid.
I Googled it due to the hoopla surrounding it after last night's win and it seems to have wide acclaim from critics, as expected, but audience reviews are more split, with some loving it and others disliking it. Not many in the middle -- sort of like the pineapple on pizza debate.
Anyway, I just searched the DU and found only your thread offering an overview. Clearly, you were impressed. I will have to give it a shot someday soon.
La Coliniere
(1,305 posts)I enjoyed watching Anora the second time as much as I did the first. I saw most of the nominated films this year and I think the best film won Picture of the Year. Mikey Madison gives a tour de force performance, glad it was also honored.

(22,470 posts)Sure, the nudity and sex was gratuitous, but that was a key to the movie's overall themes.
It's very relevant to the world we currently are living in, where the ultra rich use regular people as toys, and where regular people can only dream of the type of life the rich take for granted.
