Actually went to see a movie today, I chose Dunkirk. Honestly, it was not that good of a movie. No character development, no real plot and no meaningful dialogue. It was like watching the Poseidon Adventure.
But the filming was great as was the sound. Is it worth seeing? Yes, on the big screen when the prices come down...

(6,133 posts)One great movie, much of which takes place in Dunkirk is "Atonement."

(5,737 posts)You appear to want fiction instead of facts. Meaningful dialogue? Join the military. Go to war. See how much dialogue there is. Yeah, I've been there.

(5,737 posts)The war in Europe WOULD have been very different if not for this event and the actions of so many heroic souls.

(7,470 posts)Thought it was great. Dunkirk was the plot. Character development - young men who survived; the goodness of the human spirit; the sacrifices of the pilots. The decency of the father and brother of the young boy who was pushed by the surviving pilot. They never let the pilot know the boy died from his head injury. One life was lost, no need to burden and destroy another with the knowledge that he was responsible. I came out of the movie knowing that the human heart is good even though we are now surrounded by cruelty and disdain by our current political leaders.
Also, words are few in war. Not much to say after all. Survival is oftentimes quiet.
The musical score was one of the actors of the movie. Perfect.

(3 posts)He liked it well enough, but he said it was way too loud. (This from a West Point graduate who spent some thirty years in the U.S. Army.) When I asked how many decibels, he said, 115. I hope he was off by at least 10 decibels, but Rex Reed said essentially the same thing: entirely too loud, with the music being the main problem. For that reason, I will not be going to see it in a movie theater. While I may miss out on some spectacular visuals, I dont want to be blasted out of my seat. If you go to see it in a theater, youd be well-advised to take some earplugs with you. You can thank me later.
You can thank me later. Me, I prefer films with character development -- even if its fictional characters in a film about a real event.

(12 posts)This is the first thing I have read about it that was not a glowing recommendation. Other than the noise volume addressed below I have not really heard any complaints.
question everything
(48,870 posts)and plotline.
It progressed at its own pace, in parallel time line. It was difficult to watch. To come out with a conclusion that "war is hell" is a gross understatment.
To see the anguish, the helplessness of the soldiers. No general leading the battle, no major heroes, or stars. Amazing to see the great Kenneth Branagh in a small role. There really was not much of a dialogue.
And... it tells a piece of history that is not familiar with many of us, in this country, since it takes place before we joined the war.

(2,252 posts)with Gary Oldman playing Churchill should go well with Dunkirk.
