Hard to believe Meryl Streep wasn't aware of Weinstein's problem with power and women until now. How come I knew about it years ago and I'm not "in the business"? I am a huge fan of Streep and this disappoints me. Wouldn't it have been more honest to say, "it's time this was exposed and I'm stand with the women"? It's OK to not be the first to call out injustice, to be afraid for your career. If you're female you've experienced it. Just say so.

(16,524 posts)But how come, I live in Colorado, work in medicine, rarely read anything having to do with Hollywood (I like movies, but celebrities are not my thing) and I knew about it? I mean, you could be right, certainly. I just find it odd.

The women who went along with some of his crazy said they went along with it to get something they really wanted.

(5,811 posts)These were women who wanted a part or other assistance with their career. The New York times articles only discussed women in that category. However, I just recall another article where he sexually harassed a reporter in a restaurant hallway. It was an interesting story because both the victim and her friend knew about Harvey pervy behavior.

(16,524 posts)I mean, he could sort of make 'em or break 'em in The Business. Sounds like it extended all the way to print media.

(47,209 posts)The business- that ain't Meryl's history with him. Young women told each other- not old pros like Meryl.
And I'm sure there are tons of inaccurate rumors too.

(47,209 posts)And it's possible a few people knew that was what it took to get work with him and went for it without his prompting. It's likely we'll not know much from women who decided the abuse was worth the career help. None of that justifies this crap.

(16,524 posts)Long ago when I was working in a hotel, I had a boss, the general manager, who was horribly abusive and misogynistic. I was young, naive and always sort of blamed myself. It would have never occurred to me to wire-up and bust his ass. Now, sure.

(16,524 posts)It said they did have him recorded and Weinstein had so much power in ALL media that he quashed the stories. Now it's all coming out. One very reputable reported tried to expose him for years.

(8,624 posts)She's normally so brave to speak truth to power, I can't imagine she'd not tell the truth about this.

(16,524 posts)My concern was how she didn't know about his reputation before now. I just read where Jessica Chastain said she was "warned from the beginning; the stories were out there."

(6,437 posts)Yeah, the stories were out there, and most of the blame outside of Weinstein himself belongs with the company because they were fully aware of it and knew of the settlements. But at the same time, there's thousands and thousands of actors, circles, cliques, and so forth and it's akin to not knowing what's going on with a company president at some other company in the same industry when you're mid-level management. You're dealing with what's in front of you, your own production company, etc.
We're all pulled in so many different ways that when you add onto it what actors also deal with in being pulled to dozens of press junkets around the world, you don't hear everything. And a lot of them, when they're not working on set, unplug from Hollywood entirely out of state.
This kind of thing could be going on at a "rival" business to my own within my industry and I'd have no clue. Because I don't pay attention to what their personnel are up to as I'm focusing on my own and what I need to accomplish because I don't even have enough time in the day to do that.
And what complicates a lot of this more are the settlements because that locks up people that could actively talk about under NDAs.
