What'd you think?

After the almost hyperactive aspects of Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Thor: Ragnarok, taking in Black Panther was a whole other experience. It has the big action pieces but it's also a lot more mellow, a lot more relaxed and ~confident~ in itself, and it has a lot of areas where it's actually quiet instead of filled with big music sequences. It's a strong and solid movie for a whole lot of reasons, but this is what stood out for me.

the only people they'll keep from seeing it probably wouldn't have gone anyway

Marvel fans like me will see it anyway and enjoy it, because it's really cool.

plus it will bring in people who enjoy strong female roles and African themes, black or otherwise. My wife is from Africa, white, and not exactly an action movie fan, but she loved the movie.

plus it will bring in people who want to study costume and set design, because this movie has some of the best.

word will spread, and the assholes who post fake reviews in the name of racism will fail to significantly affect box office, and discredit themselves in the process.

3. Definitely do!

It's a different tone and palette than the other movies, but kids need to be exposed to all types of film.

For reference, I took my eight year old to see Iron Man back in 2008 as her first "grown up movie" as part of her film education (I work in the medium to a degree, so they've gotten years of layered exposure to stuff). This year is the ten year anniversary of the film and Marvel Studios works proper and she was so excited to see this that it became her favorite movie of all the Marvel stuff now. These films are very good for introducing a lot of different types of stories.

There's lots of great characters of both genders here that stand out across the board. It'll be a great experience, especially if you talk about it afterward.

As did my sister, niece and friend.

One part I found particularly impressive (beyond all that the others here have mentioned) is the strong women characters. They are well-rounded and involved in running the nation, the army, the spy network, and technical innovation.

Wonder Woman (2017) proved that a woman-centered action film can draw in large crowds and big money. I hope that Black Panther proves the same point about action films with a hero (or heroine!) of color!

9. just got back from a showing, it's really well done

overall, i found it shared a lot with the other Marvel movies. and that's a good thing.

the soundtrack, sound editing, makeup, costumes, and set design were all phenomenal. i had no problem suspending disbelief, which is crucial in pushing a superhero film to true excellence.

despite the funny name, i found Killmonger to be a well-developed antagonist whom i was a bit saddened to see depart.
