and as much as I like Tom Hanks and recognize that he's a gifted actor, I really wish they'd have found some complete unknown who could truly be Fred Rogers.

This is a problem that most recognizable actors have. After a while you just see the actor, not the role or the character they are supposed to be playing. Which is why character actors can be so wonderful. Most of the time you don't remember them from one film to another, so they are often highly believable in the role they're playing.
