My girlfriend and I watched American History X first time we've seen it

Wow. Just feels like today's world. Bunch of people who are pissed off that get attached to others who hate. Think my girlfriend was more saddened by the movie since her ex, the father of her daughter is part of the aryan brotherhood. So I know it hit closer to home for her.

This quote at the end hits hard.

"My conclusion is that hate is baggage, life is too short to be pissed off all the time."

1. I rented this movie ...

... as soon as it was available at the video store.

After watching it, I gave it to my son and said, "I really want you to see this." my son was 14 at the time, and the movie had an R-18 rating - but I thought it was important for him to see it.

It had a profound affect on him. Most of his friends were black, and I thought he should know that there were people who were not as 'racially friendly' as the people here in Toronto.

I thought it was a huge mistake to keep teenagers from seeing this film, as they were the most vulnerable to falling prey to the propaganda of racists and white supremacists.

American History X should be required viewing for teens - a graphically violent lesson, but one that needs to be learned early on.

2. I agree

Teens online especially fall victim to sites like 4chan, 8chan and such that breed all the hate they feel and they don't know why they're so full of hate and anger. When they convince you that you are lesser than a black person or a woman. I guess they feel it and take it to heart.

I assume my girlfriends ex fell into it young, but so did she and had a hard time getting away from it. But she did and later came out of the closet. I know it must have been difficult for her to watch it but she did.

And yet there's something compelling that says, "Don't avert your eyes, because this is a reality you need to see."

4. It was hard to watch

I can't imagine how hard it was for her. I know she fell into that life and had a time getting out. She constantly fears him coming back and hurting her or her daughter. I don't know how deep her involvement ran, but I hope it wasn't iceberg levels of deep

I'm just saying that because if I were her, that would be most comforting to hear.

If he or his friends come around, they'll have to go through me. I won't allow her to be hurt or her daughter. Just hearing her horror stories was enough to know the life is awful.

8. She saved me

She accepted me when I was having a hard time going through transitioning. She was there when my dad rejected me as his daughter now. She saved me from my own mental anguish. I owe her a lot. Like before we watched this movie, I asked her if she was comfort and she was. She knew the general idea of the movie and plot.
