My Mother & Aunts would switch up between the different butters when making this cake, and on special occasions, they used apples.
recipe for cake
1/2 cup shortening..1/2 cup brown sugar..1/2 cup buttermilk..1/3 cup molasses..1 large egg..1 t. Vanilla.........3 1/2 cups flour..1 t. Ginger....1t. Cinnamon..1/2 t. Baking soda...pinch of salt...1/2 t. Nutmeg.

You can find these at every grocery store and family run restaurant around here. The more cinnamon the better.
