Scary news this morning--UPDATE (not good)

A member of the direct-care staff at my mom's nursing home (one who works on her wing) has tested positive for Corona virus.

The facility has been in lock-down (no visitors, no day-trips, etc) for a while now, and the staff have been wearing protective equipment for a few weeks.

There's no way my mom gets through this if she gets infected. She has considerable heart trouble and high blood pressure as well as Alzheimer's Disease. She's 86.

We're not going to tell Dad unless Mom gets ill. There's nothing he can do except worry.

I guess that's all I can do too.

Update: We got news yesterday that a patient on the ward w/ my mother tested positive...

...and at 3:00 am today, a call from the nursing home that Mom is having trouble breathing. She apparently has no fever as of yet, but has been put on oxygen treatment.

care facility had tested positive.

I hope the nursing home takes proper remedial measures very quickly. I was just reading about one in Tennessee and I could tell from interviews with the management that they had been in denial about how the disease spreads.

It could be these care homes will need staff to shelter within the home to prevent bringing it in.

One thought: If they would allow it, you might consider shipping a small HEPA air filtration unit to be put in your mom's room to help clean the air in her space. Does not prevent contact spread but might help her odds of not getting it from the environment.

15. So sad to hear about

Your family situation Miss Millie. My 87-year-old momma has been in a nursing home since January 2019, after back and neck surgery, and I keep close tabs as to her care, yet it’s been frustrating after they went on total lock-down March 1st but appreciate the move.

If she was to develop an illness attributed to something like influenza, which there’s treatment for, I would most likely still go crazy.

17. I hope your mom and her fellow residents get through in good health.

My mom is also in an assisted living facility. Thankfully, they, too, went into lockdown early. However, after only about a week of the no visitors, no day trips policy, they felt they needed to tighten that up and require residents to stay in their rooms, even for meals. So far, it was been effective. But, like you, I am constantly worried. Mom, at 89, is one of the young ones there.

18. This is playing out in nursing homes all across the country.

Elderly die and they don't even test them for coronavirus. Our coronavirus deaths are no doubt much higher than the statistics.

will be tested unless they become ill.

The only thing good about both our sets of parents being gone is they won't have to go through this. Our worries include our older sibs. They're all late 60's to early 70's. My wife and I are both babies of our families...way younger than our sibs.
