South Carolina basketball GOAT A'ja Wilson ties all-time WNBA record
South Carolina basketball legend A'ja Wilson is a virtual lock to win the 2024 WNBA MVP. With all due respect to Napheesa Collier, Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, Caitlin Clark, Alyssa Thomas, and the other players in the WNBA who are having great seasons, Wilson is the best player in the sport, and the 2024 season has proven that reality.
The former Gamecock is leading the entire league in points scored and is on pace to break the single-season scoring record for both total points and points per game. She is 2nd in the W in rebounds and is set to break that all-time record, as well, but rookie Angel Reese is poised to break the record by an even bigger margin. She also leads all of women's basketball in blocked shots and blocks per game.
Wilson just turned 28 years old, but she already is one of the greatest players ever to play in the WNBA. It feels like she breaks a record every week, but on Friday, she fell beneath that standard as she merely tied the league's mark as the fastest player ever to reach 4500 career points scored. Wilson matched Breanna Stewart's 217 games as she reached the milestone, though, she is nearly a year younger than Stewart was when she hit the mark and played significantly fewer minutes.
Wilson and her Las Vegas Aces have a worse record this season than casual fans might expect as they have battled injuries to important players. Even still, they are firmly in the WNBA postseason field as the standings sit today, and they are still viewed as one of the two biggest contenders for the WNBA title, along with Breanna Stewart's New York Liberty squad.
