Detroit Mercy freshmen seizing opportunity to make quick impact

Detroit ― Interestingly, Mark Montgomery didn't have a hard time getting through doors on the recruiting trail after he was hired in early April as Detroit Mercy's head men's basketball coach. Even with the Titans coming off a historically awful, one-win season.

"The one thing I could sell is playing time and opportunity," Montgomery said after a recent practice at Calihan Hall. "These kids can play, so they're playing. No one's complaining. They're playing."

And, so far, they're playing pretty darn well.

Detroit Mercy was 1-31 last season, leading to the departure of head coach Mike Davis. The Titans are 4-5 this season, and they're coming off a 98-89 overtime win at Eastern Michigan. That was a telling win, in that Detroit Mercy let a double-digit lead slip away, before bouncing back to dominate the overtime period.
