Black market will thrive if NJ puts $42-an-ounce tax on legal weed

By John Crudele February 20, 2019 | 10:05pm

The people who smoke dope aren’t necessarily dopes.

I hate to poop on New Jersey’s pot party, but I have a question: Why would anyone buy legal marijuana when the state is planning to place a $42-an-ounce tax on the stuff?

You probably heard that Jersey is about to legalize marijuana so that adults can buy it for recreational use. It’ll be just like booze, which anyone over 21 in the state can purchase. Only difference is that New Jersey doesn’t tax liquor as onerously as it will pot.

There’s a 12-cents-a-gallon tax on beer in Jersey and 85.7 cents a gallon on wine. Hard liquor is taxed at $5.50 a gallon.

I think that’s happening in California too.

Strong controls on the new legal Cannabis stores but no worries for the existing illegal market

42 bucks an ounce is insane!

They sure as hell don't tax alcohol that much.

It might not be Top Shelf, but it's weed. Are they giving it away up there?

$75/100/150/200 would be typical, I guess. The cheap stuff probably has been on the shelf for a while and/or tested below 15% THC. I can't really tell you about the whole state, though, as I don't travel much, and grow my own, anyways. We have about 6 dispensaries in Cortez, because we are the only legal corner in the Four Corners, and I see the ads in the storefronts when I go into town.

Primo Grade “A” Cannabis. I’m not so lucky! Unfortunately, for me, that is, this state is a “follower state” and never, ever, ever, never leads. As I’ve said before it wouldn’t surprise me, in the least, if Maryland is the very last mid Atlantic state to legalize “Adult Use Cannabis” sales. It’s nothing personal against Maryland, it’s just how this state rolls. Well, maybe, a little personal. 😕😡

The law of diminishing returns states that in all productive processes, adding more of one factor of production, while holding all others constant ("ceteris paribus&quot , will at some point yield lower incremental per-unit returns.[1] The law of diminishing returns does not imply that adding more of a factor will decrease the total production, a condition known as negative returns, though in fact this is common.

I believe, the taxes will come down. At this point I’ll pay the taxes on NJ cannabis if/WHEN I go there. 🤔🥴
