Scott Hutkoski has planted his first eight acres of hemp on his family farm in Western Massachusetts at a cost of $25,000 and is uncertain if he will make a profit.
A tobacco farmer, Hutkoski has seen a huge decline in demand, going from 65 acres four years ago to just 10 acres of tobacco today on his Whately property, Long Plain Farm. He and his brother are now looking to hemp as a financial savior.
Ive been working at a local construction site for the last four years as an extra source of income, said Hutkoski. We just dont have enough coming in to farm full time anymore.
August will be the first hemp harvest for Hutkoski.
