Craig Ford endorses Martin O'Malley for president.
'Alabama House Minority Leader Craig Ford, D-Gadsden, endorsed former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley for president, citing what he called O'Malley's record of accomplishment as governor and mayor of Baltimore.
"I listened to all the presidential candidates, and Martin O'Malley was the only one not just talking about creating jobs and improving education, but who has actually accomplished those things as a mayor and governor," Ford said in a statement sent Friday to AL.com by the O'Malley campaign. ""Gov. O'Malley is also the only candidate talking about increasing support for national service. I think serving your country is important. That's why I served in the Alabama National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve. I know the military isn't for everybody, but I believe that our country would be so much stronger if everybody had a little skin in the game. That's why we need a president who will expand national service opportunities for young Americans."
The O'Malley campaign said Ford would be heading up the candidate's leadership team in Alabama.
O'Malley said Ford "has worked tirelessly to strengthen Alabama's middle class, improve education and treat state employees fairly."
"I'm glad to have his support," he added.
The former Maryland governor, who is running in the Democratic primary against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, was the first candidate to submit a delegate slate to the Alabama Democratic Party. The Yellowhammer State is among a group of southern states holding their primary March 1, which has been dubbed the "SEC Primary" after the NCAA football conference.
Among O'Malley's delegates is Sarah Collins Rudolph, one of the survivors of the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham in 1963. Rudolph explained why she was running as an O'Malley delegate.
"Plenty of politicians try to make promises, but Gov. O'Malley is truly a leader who's shown he has what it takes to get things done - from raising the minimum wage to ending the death penalty," she said. "He speaks to the heart of the Democratic Party that I want future generations to see."'
