O'Malley: Upgrade technology to fight gun crimes.
'Improving law enforcement's response to suspicious purchases would be just one measure Martin O'Malley would use to cut the number of U.S. gun deaths, the Democratic presidential hopeful said Thursday.
The former Maryland governor detailed a spate of gun reforms that he would push for using the president's executive power in a meeting with The Des Moines Register's editorial board. Chief among them would be improving connections to help local agencies get flagged when a gun sale falls through because a purchaser fails a background check.
For instance, the FBI already has an alert system designed to root out federal fugitives if they try to buy a firearm, O'Malley said.
"You could do that also for state and local governments for people who are on probation or parole because of their convictions," he said.
O'Malley's reforms would also feature a mandate that manufacturers who sell to the federal government get in line with a host of upgraded safety measures, including "microstamping" that involves building hardware into guns that marks fired shell casings to more easily track firearms used in crimes.
"If we insisted on the highest and best safety technology, microstamping of rounds, serial numbers that can't be effaced and maybe even other technologies that identify the authorized user of the gun, that's one use of executive authority," he said.'
