Boomers are voting in ways that would steal the future from young people.

Boomers are voting in a way to get rid of Donald Trump, the single biggest problem that young people and everyone else has right now. He's the guy who first fired the pandemic team, cut the CDC budget, tried to kill Obamacare, and cut funding for Obamacare. He's the guy who sat on his ass instead of pushing for millions of coronavirus tests, too busy patting himself on the back for 'containing' the coronavirus instead of creating a PLAN B in case the virus wasn't contained.

If we don't get rid of Trump, he will keep making decisions that result in more people dying, young and old. In Italy, half the people in their ICUs are under 60 years old. Just because older people die more often does not mean coronavirus cannot kill the young, and it doesn't mean it cannot scar the lungs of people who do survive.

I'm a "great legislation" boomer, at least as much as I was old enough in time to support.

These are the 'voters' we need to pander to???

Like you say, IF they would get out and vote. The truth of it is if they got out and voted they would probably not vote in a bloc. About 50% of women voters voted for Trump who made no secret of how much he worked against their interests.

Since when does a Democracy work by taking the threats of a non voting segment 'literally'.

As shown by your stereotyping of young people as Nintendo playing and phone obsessed. No generation is better than another. I’m just glad that as these Millennials are growing up, they’re keeping their liberal viewpoints from when they were younger. If that trend continues, Republicans will soon be an endangered species.

For some reason they never have. From what I’ve read, that’s partly why McGovern lost. They thought the youth would turn out and vote for him but they didn’t. And Nintendo and phones weren’t to blame back then.

Young people should be more engaged, no question. As they get older, they will be, just like previous generations.

Anand Giridharadas
@AnandWrites

We are living in a moment of passive-aggressive generational warfare.

Boomers are voting in ways that would steal the future from young people.

And many young people are shrugging off the virus in ways that risk stealing the future from boomers.

We are asking many young people to sacrifice, and they should. We are telling them that, while they risk little by getting infected, they endanger others. We are telling them we’re in this together.

But when young people make similar claims in politics, do their elders listen?
The virus isn’t the beginning of our social contract.

Young people have been voting for real change for years now, only to have it thwarted by older voters.

They want guaranteed healthcare, but people who already have care can’t be moved to send down the ladder.

This is why we shouldn’t be selective in our we-are-all-in-this-together arguments. Because it’s a maxim that is always true, not just when it benefits you.

It’s true about staying home from bars. And it’s true about paid sick leave and Medicare for All.

Feeling in-this-together with people is a societal habit. There’s a reason it is in short supply right now during the virus. Because we haven’t been cultivating this habit in our politics and civic life.

So, yes, #StayTheFHome. But also: Vote for policies that help others.

If you look at any opinion survey of young people, young people are not the reason we have a low minimum wage, bad healthcare, job insecurity, unaffordable debt, etc.

Young people have been voting overwhelmingly for a we-are-all-in-this-together society and being rejected.

The message a young person might take from living in this era is: I guess we’re all in it for ourselves.

That is a message that’s going to get a lot of people killed in this crisis. It’s wrong and needs to be fought. But it can’t just be fought by telling people to stay home.

We are living on the back end of a four-decade cultural project to make us disbelieve in having each other’s back.

As we fight the virus, we must remember that this is the larger battle we’re in — and enlisting in it may be the key to beating the virus.

Sun Mar 15, 2020, 05:44 PM
Mar 2020

For those age 65+ it was 66.1%; for age 45-64 it was 59.5%; for age 30-44 it was 48.4%. So, once again, the voting rate for Boomers was almost twice that of the youngest group. https://www.census.gov/content/census/en/library/stories/2019/04/behind-2018-united-states-midterm-election-turnout/jcr:content/par/image_copy.uscbimg.576.medium.jpg/1555959891829.jpg Your statistic lumps three groups together, not just the youngest voters, for the total number of votes cast, but as the second chart in your link indicates, the percentage of youngest eligible voters who actually vote still remains the lowest of all age groups. As I said before - they don't vote. If they want something to happen they need to do better than 35.6%.

stuck between the demographic juggernauts of the Boomers with their numbers and buying power and Millennials with, well, their numbers I guess.

The Boomers outnumber and outspend us sufficiently so as to ensure that they haven’t really aged out of power the way their parents did. The energy and savvy of the Millennials will probably allow them to leapfrog the Xers if they ever figure out how to vote. We’ll be quietly in the background with our Smiths records hoping not to piss anyone off.
