For all I know this could be goodby.

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by JudyM (a host of the Democratic Primaries forum).

Attorney General Barr would like under the new emergency act to hold people with out charging for an indefinite period of time. I wonder how long it will be before some of us rebellious people end up missing.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

Mike Lee's reaction is likely that of others on the right. It's going nowhere in Congress.

But scary enough just that they thought they could even ask for it in the first place.

Nice to see that the GOP *may* draw the line somewhere between foreign election interference and domestic judicial abuse.

the Bush Administration wanted to be able to arrest anyone on suspicion of terrorist activities and be able to detain them indefinitely? This desire for the DOJ to be able to arrest anyone and hold them indefinitely has become the standard playbook among Republicans:

) When a Republican is the President, Republicans like to act as if the President has the power of kings who can do whatever they want

2) When a Democrat is the President, endlessly complain about "big government" and "government overreach". Oppose all legislation, even if it will help the country, and even if it is supported by a majority of Republicans.

The DOJ has requested Congress allow any chief judge of a district court to pause court proceedings “whenever the district court is fully or partially closed by virtue of any natural disaster, civil disobedience, or other emergency situation,” according to draft language obtained by Politico. This would be applicable to “any statutes or rules of procedure otherwise affecting pre-arrest, post-arrest, pre-trial, trial, and post-trial procedures in criminal and juvenile proceedings and all civil processes and proceedings.” They justify this by saying currently judges can pause judicial proceedings in an emergency but that new legislation would allow them to apply it “in a consistent manner.”

Judge: "What's your party affiliation?"

Defendant #1: "Republican, sir."

Judge: "Okay, you're free to go. Next! What party do you belong to?"

Defendant #2: "Democrat, your Honor."

Judge: "6 months...no bail, no trial."

Seems pretty consistent to me.
