California Sen. Kamala Harris made two notable fundraising moves Wednesday that are sure to fuel speculation about her prospects to be Joe Bidens running mate on the Democratic presidential ticket.
Harris, who dropped out of the White House race in December, set up a joint fundraising operation with the Democratic National Committee, an arrangement that is typically reserved for nominees trying to attract large donations from the partys biggest boosters. Hours later, she made a surprise appearance on a virtual fundraiser, introducing Biden to donors.
Harris, 55, will host her own virtual fundraiser Thursday. The deal allows contributors to give a maximum of $357,800, with $2,800 going to retire Harris presidential campaign debts and the rest going to the national party.
The senator and the DNC filed paperwork for the arrangement Wednesday with the Federal Election Commission, in the first joint fundraising agreement of its kind for Democrats this election cycle. Biden and the party chairman, Tom Perez, had been hesitant to enter into such an arrangement while Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders was still actively campaigning against Biden. But Sanders suspended his campaign Wednesday, making Biden the presumptive nominee.

(3,281 posts)Who gets us progressives, African-American voters, and Wisconsin/Arizona/NC? (I am ignoring Florida as that is a beast onto itself and without a State governor or Senator, it's hard to imagine swinging that one based on a VP pick. It will swing if the political winds strongly favor the democratic party as a whole).
Given that no one gets us everything, Biden will have to decide on which particular group will be most beneficial to focus on. Something will have to be sacrificed. It's unfortunate that Harris's progressivism isn't widely recognized. Unlike Warren, choosing her wouldn't risk a Senate seat that we can't afford to lose.

(6,300 posts).... It becomes clear that Kamala Harris would be a poor choice for Joe Biden's running mate. There are several far better choices such as Val Demings, and Gretchen Whitmer, just to name two. Hopefully, logical, and not emotional vetting will play play a significant role in making his choice.

(17,980 posts)Can she move the needle in Florida? After losing the 2018 Senate and Governor races in a Blue tide, I don't hold much hope for Florida. It would be a prize worth having. It covers any two of the three "firewall" states (PA, MI, and WI).

(6,300 posts).... launched their careers on shaky ground. She has since then become a respected and admired figure in government. She is quite popular in her state which is one Joe Biden needs. I think she will deliver it which will only give her credibility in surrounding states.
Now, let's talk about Kamala Harris. She is from a solid blue state. She barely garnered 5% of the black vote during her entire primary campaign. She used incredibly bad judgment in trying to derail Joe Biden's campaign by playing the race card several times. Unless you were living under a rock, everyone knows those attempts backfired spectacularly on her. I believe that was what ultimately set her on the path to withdrawing from the race. I do believe her background makes her well-suited for the Senate which is where I believe she will continue to be an effective force for the Democratic Party.
There are several women who could bring a lot to Joe Biden's campaign. Kamala Harris is not one of them.

(4,997 posts)Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has been mentioned as a potential running mate for the Democratic presidential nominee but Monday again tamped down such speculation.
Whitmer praised former Vice President Joe Biden for committing to pick a woman to be his running mate, but "it's not going to be me," she told MSNBC.
"I think it's important that he has a woman running mate, to be honest. I think that there are a lot of phenomenal potential running mates for him," said Whitmer, who endorsed Biden this month and serves as a co-chair of his national campaign.
"I'm going to help him vet and make sure he's got a great running mate. It is not going to be me," she added with a smile. "But I'm going to have a hand in helping make sure that that he has got the rounded out ticket that can win.

I like Gov Whitmer, but she doesn't seem to want it. I also like Rep Val Demings, but she hasn't won statewide, which means she wouldn't necessarily help flip Florida (also, currently Biden was ahead of 45 in FL on his own).

(4,997 posts)As for your post #13, I'll try to break it down as I happen to disagree with your assessment.
Biden was from a solid blue state when Obama chose him. Also, research indicates that VP candidates state of residence generally has no effect on how a presidential candidate performs in that state.
There were several factors at play. Large primary field, Biden was the first black POTUS's VP, etc. Harris had the highest # of CBC endorsements prior to her dropping out (yes, I know that's not "regular" voters, but among her peers). BTW, Booker or Patrick had even less support with voters.
If you recall prior to that debate, Biden was recounting having worked with segregationists. He brought it into the conversation and she expressed how she felt as a little girl. That isn't "playing the race card" it's illuminating her life's experience. Also, Biden doesn't hold a grudge about it, he understands politics isn't beanbag.
--
Further, it is insulting to say she would not bring anything to Biden's campaign. Harris has both executive and legislative experience. She won statewide in the nations most populous state 3 times. She has also worked tirelessly for down-ticket races across the country and advocates for marginalized voices across the spectrum.
Harris has the 2nd highest lifetime rating of being a progressive democrat (higher than both Sanders and Warren) --> https://progressivepunch.org/scores.htm?house=senate
She also happens to be representative of the backbone of the democratic party -- black women, and representation matters. YMMV

(6,300 posts)I will stand by mine.
By any standards, this election is far more different and crucial than any other we've had. That is why he needs to choose someone who can deliver a critical swing state.
Joe Biden's comments are always taken out of context by his enemies or his rivals.
One example: the segregationists crap-
Black lawmakers get Biden's back amid 'segregationist' uproar
Snip:
Progressives pounced on the remarks, and two other White House hopefuls criticized the 76-year-old Democratic presidential poll leader over his comments at a fundraiser Tuesday night. But more than a half-dozen CBC members argued that Bidens remarks were taken out of context and that the former senators call for decency is needed now more than ever.
I worked with Strom Thurmond all my life, House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.), the highest-ranking African American in Congress, said of the infamous segregationist senator. You dont have to agree with people to work with them.

I believe Joe Biden's remarks were purposely taken out of context to gain political points. That's an easy one. She definitely played the race card.
Barack Obama is not running in this election. So, where did the majority of the black support go? Joe Biden. Your opinion on this could be suggestive of someone who does not believe black voters can make an intelligent decision regarding who they believe will better serve them.
Like I said, there are several women who would be a great asset as Joe Biden's VP choice. I simply do not believe Kamala Harris is one of them.

(4,997 posts)Saying she "played the race card" is reductive of Sen Harris' experience a black girl/woman at the time busing was an issue and is offensive. A black person talking about race and how it's impacted them isn't "playing the race card."
In no way shape or form is that what I'm suggesting. I'm mixed race, one of which is AA. So again, completely offensive.

Imagine Kamala Harris, face-to-face, saying, "Mr Clyburn, I was that little girl."
I'll bet you $1,000 that criticizing Jim Clyburn for "coddling" or "praising" a segregationist never entered her mind, then or now. Doing that to Joe Biden was an opportunity which unfortunately for her, she decided to take with far less than successful results.

It was your own words that led me to that possible conclusion. Perhaps with a little more thought, you might have come up with a better excuse as to why Kamala Harris was barely able to garner 5% of the black vote during her entire campaign.
