Evangelical supporters of Donald Trump are finding out that the former president is not as committed to their ideals as they thought he was as they watch him play political games with abortion and IVF to avoid being associated with their unpopular principles. McKay Coppins, staff writer for the Atlantic, joins to discuss. - Aired on 08/30/2024.

2. Agreed, they sure need a wake up call

3. Trump is trying to walk a middle line now

between Evangelicals and the majority of women who are not Evangelical. So he is trying to gaslight both groups and is alienating both.

There are more women who are not hardline Evangelicals than women who are. So Trump is trying to win over the majority of women with a "middle road" position on abortion and is willing to throw Evangelicals under the bus in order to not lose among the majority. But most women blame Trump for overturning Roe and are too angry about it to believe his shifting positions.

Add in Vance's misogyny and Trump should do poorly among women voters and among Evangelical men and women.

He's now trying to play both sides, not realizing that most voters have a much better memory than his... And Vance's misogyny sure isn't helping.

5. After I posted about Trump's dilemma on abortion,

I watched the Joy Reid clip that you posted where she and her guests say essentially the same thing. Trump has painted himself into a corner. He promoted the polarization on abortion when he cultivated Evangelical voters. Pro choice women, who are the majority, are just as adamant about the right to abortion, especially now that we see the horrific health effects of banning it. So Trump is now the victim of his own promotion of polarization on abortion. When he now tries for compromise and less polarization, both sides turn against him.

Looks like abortion is the issue that unmasks his phoniness to people who could not see it before.

6. And if he was smart enough to listen to actual news, he'd know that reproductive rights is a big issue in this country

No one is "thanking him" for taking that choice away from women as he has boasted. Yes, it is a polarizing issue, but taking these decisions away from women has had a devastating effect on both women and the medical profession. And it's way too late for him to walk away from it, the damage is done. And so, you're right, both "sides" are turning against this despicable hypocrite.
