Phoenix, Arizona has endured a record-breaking 104 days with temperatures above 100 degrees. Globally, this summer was the hottest on record, beating out the previous record set just last year. Climate change is increasingly exposing us to temperatures that the human body cant endure. Heat is the deadliest weather phenomenon - by far. - Aired on 09/07/2024.

(35,764 posts)Lake effect snows suck in the winter, but even then the Lakes protect us from extreme cold. It's 60F and sunny at 5:38 pm, but we're supposed to get the heat from the west next week. Even so, it's still only going to top out in the mid-80s. I feel so bad for the folks out west.

(222,072 posts)We have had both record high temperatures in the summer and cold in the winter, but nothing like the Southwest. And, though I may not feel that way in the cold of winter, I'm thankful, too. And I feel for those in the Southwest now, though I may wish I was there in January.

(92,668 posts)You can do something about the cold, you can't do anything about the heat after a point, as Velshi points out. I'm glad he's doing this segment.
So for some help, it's good to consume melons, without other food unless it's cucumbers, to keep cool, prevent heat exhaustion and assist in recovering from heat affects... to a point. Water is needed but this group of foods is particularly endowed with natural electrolytes as well as fluid. I try to keep either cantaloupe, watermelon or cucumbers handy when I know it will be over +75F. I get heat stressed easily.
Even in Montana we're having triple digit temps every summer now. I remember when +85F was a heat wave around here... and we used to get 20 - 30+ feet of snow each winter.
Not any more. Getting really weird and scary.
