'It's not good for public safety': Project 2025's extreme death penalty plan - Velshi - MSNBC

Both Project 2025 and Donald Trump’s Agenda 47 call for a major expansion of the use of the death penalty, including for crimes not involving death, like drug trafficking and rape. Georgetown Law professor and former federal prosecutor Paul Butler explains that this may actually result in offenders going unpunished, as victims may hesitate to come forward if it could result in the death of their abuser.

“It’s not good for public safety,” Butler tells Ali Velshi. Regardless of one’s opinion on capital punishment in principle, in practice, its implementation has also historically been uneven, disproportionately being applied to vulnerable populations. “It’s not actually the bad guys that get it,” Butler says. - Aired on 09/29/2024.
