Metaphorical
(2,342 posts)Trump has always ruled by fear - if you did not declare your loyalty to him specifically, he would turn his followers against you, and as those followers constituted a sizeable percentage of the GOP, this would guarantee that your career as a politician was over. However, that has backfired for him after leaving office. Trump-endorsed candidates that made it through the primary would get trounced in the general, or would often turn out to be political embarrassments some time thereafter. Notice how few candidates this cycle have had rallies with him? They know if they do that the rally will turn into a Trump campaign rally and they will end up holding the bill at the end.
I generally do not like the GOP, but there were several GOP congresspeople I at least had a modicum of respect for, and I recognize that a one party system, no matter how well intentioned, will get into trouble if it doesn't have a counterveiling party. The Democrats need a Republican party, but the prospect of a Trump/Nazi party with unchecked power will spell the end of democracy in the United States.

Person A: "No Scotsman puts sugar on his porridge."
Person B: "But my uncle Angus is a Scotsman and he puts sugar on his porridge."
Person A: "But no true Scotsman puts sugar on his porridge."
