It should be pretty evident to Putin that Trump is visibly decomposing mentally, and that the chances of him winning the election are dropping daily. At some point, he may very well decide to try a goodwill gesture and, through third channels, release compromat that he's been holding for a while. I'm not sure it will make up for all the damage that he's done, but it can't hurt.
