Indeed he is likely to remain as president until he dies and then another authoritarian will take over. Lukashenko has been a dictator in Belarus since 1994. Nicolae Ceaușescu was the Romanian communist dictator from 1967 until 1989.

It’s hard to get rid of dictators once they have a foothold. Trump is showing every intention of creating a government that is loyal only to him. Trump, too, will eventually die (in office if he can fully overturn democracy), but his death will not necessarily end authoritarianism. Leaders of the Heritage Foundation will ensure that Vance is primed to become the next dictator.
