(58,785 posts)rule, virtually all of those strong conservatives, and poor fits for the responsibilities of democracy;
and growing up in a vigorous and mostly well functioning democracy shockingly does not reverse that.
Plus, many more on both right and far left are not as disposed as them but still vulnerable to authoritarianism, and even supportive depending on circumstances. In most humans, anxiety and fear about the future increase yearning for a strong man/government to take control, possibly increasing their numbers to a majority. And that's about where we are now. Many on the right, and a few dissident lefters, really want their own Putin to make things right here.
A huge reason why Hillary not following Obama and building on the advances he started is such a dreadful and dangerous loss. 12 or 16 years of sensible, stabilizing Democratic government that addressed problems and worked to advance economic and social wellbeing of all would have calmed down much of this dangerous anxiety so insidiously fostered by right wing enemies foreign and domestic.
