The apartment numbers are in descending order on my list
But the actual numbering here is demented
The first floor is all 100s but it's not all of the 100s: some of the second floor is 100s and some is 200s
Likewise some of the third floor is 200s and some is 300s; and then the fourth floor is all 300s
In addition, there are separate halves of the building, neither of which is accessible from the other
I don't remember ever seeing anything quite like this before
I'm constantly confused: 305 isn't on the fourth floor. Is it on the third floor? No? If it exists at all, it must be over in the other half
I constantly flip back and forth through the pages, in an effort to keep it straight
I get my arranged literature in hand again and knock another door
Then I scan the list, trying to remember who I'm hoping to chat up
I suddenly realize I've knocked the wrong door
It's probably no big deal: hardly anyone has been home today
But then (of course!) the door opens. So I offer her my list of Democrats she can vote for
She's very interested but there's a problem: she never registered to vote
I tell her she can register and vote the same day during the early voting period
You'd think I just told her she won the lottery. After giving her the details, I retreat under a barrage of gratitude
