His movie Salvador (1986) serves as a reference for anyone who is new to the bloody conflict in that country during the early 1980s. One disturbing sequence in the film recounts the rape and murder of four missionaries (three Maryknoll Sisters and one non-member of the order). The film accurately shows an official of the then-Republican U.S. administration trying to undercut the horror of the atrocity by publicly stating, ridiculously, that the victims were "pistol-packing."
