5. What's esp. infuriating about these super-old laws is that they really were intended

To stop shady operators (often men) from giving women unsafe abortions, and not so much to stop women from being able to choose. The intent was to punish the 'doctors' using unsafe methods. Or at least it was the stated reason.

It's now a very different time, and abortion is now much safer than childbirth, whereas even the 'safest' option in 1850 wasn't really all that safe or reliable.
