For example, during the Apollo 11 mission, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon using the Eagle Lunar Lander while Michael Collins remained on board the Columbia Command Module.

Taking into account the missions that went to the moon, but did not land, and the fact that some astronauts flew multiple lunar missions, you end up with 24 men that flew to the moon and 12 that landed and walked on the moon.
