1. My best 'guess' is that, unfortunately, you might be on the right track.

However, should this be the case, the 'others' you mention are walking a tightrope.

Honesty only works to a point. If there is something huge going on it would be catastrophic to be completely open and honest about it. Let's say he doesn't step down, this is now out there for all the public to know and he'd go down fast, with all the down-ballot ramifications along with it.

I really can't think of another scenario as to why this is happening. I mean today it was Sherrod Brown, who has always been one of my favorites. I've always thought of him as being a decent and upright person.
