(301 posts)First, this electoral college bullshit keeps it close. In a straight up popular vote for president the Republicans wouldn't have won the presidency since Reagan.
Second, About 45% of the people in this country get their information from right wing sites like Fox or online maga bloggers that tend to be even worse. They are filled with propaganda which is worse than just being ignorant. An empty head can simply be shown the truth but a head filled with crap has no room for the truth. Obama once said, "If I watched Fox News all day every day I'd start to hate myself".
Finally, I am old enough to remember a time when people didn't even think about politics until a few months before an election. And networks barely covered politics until just before an election. Now we live in a world of 24 hour news services that cover politics 24/7 all year long. As a result the people of this country are pretty well permanently baked into place. And that place is this. 45% are rock solid Republican and about 47% are rock solid Democrat. In a straight up popular vote we would be fine but with the electoral college it means that every 4 years the fate of our nation is in the hands of that remaining 8% living in about 7 specific states who have made it to legal voting age somehow without knowing which side they support. I don't understand people who can look at the two parties for decades and not have a firm grasp on who they support. They are an enigma that can break either way and it's often baffling as to what sways them.
So about all we can do is make damn sure every vote we can count on actually votes. All we can really do is try to maximize our turn out and hope this ridiculous electoral college bullshit doesn't put yet another Republican in the White House that lost the popular vote by millions.
