North Carolina lt. gov. makes misleading comments about Helene response efforts
Mark Robinson campaign staffer gets aggressive when asked for clarity
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, who is running for governor in 2024, shared misleading information online about Hurricane Helene recovery efforts after apparently taking a statement from President Joe Biden out of context.
Robinson made an inaccurate statement on X on Tuesday, Oct. 1, claiming Biden said the federal government had no more supplies for North Carolina in the wake of Helene -- a storm that ravaged communities across the Carolinas, and killed hundreds of people in a handful of states. It was one of several false claims circulating online, despite an explicit federal response to the devastating hurricane.
WBTV asked the Robinson campaign to show us specifically when the president allegedly said there were no more supplies for hard-hit North Carolina. Robinson campaign staffer Michael Lonergan sent over a short video clip, apparently from Sept. 29, in which Biden answers reporter questions before boarding a plane.
In the clip, a reporter asks Biden if there are any more resources the federal government could be providing related to Helene. Biden does reply no, but continues, saying, we have pre-planned a significant amount of [resources], even though they hadnt asked for it yet.
