(1,875 posts)One of the most bewildering trends that I've noticed is a certain strain of Fanboy whinging about recent iterations of Star Trek "knuckling under" to the "Woke Mind Set". Dude! Star Trek has always been "Woke", if by "Woke" you mean progressive.
I admit that I haven't watched any of the recent additions to the franchise and perhaps there are ways in which the story telling has been weakened in order to preach or reach a certain audience. But Bro-types getting their knickers in a twist and complaining about being ignored or even betrayed by the recent versions of Star Trek are very sad, indeed.
The only reason that the original series stayed within certain traditional paradigms when it aired was because Gene Roddenberry was trying to sell it to a 1960s era audience.
Oh, as for Musk the Billionaire and his little space opera fantasies, Star Trek envisioned a culture where material wealth was not lionized. In fact, the Ferengi culture was inserted into the canon as a way to ridicule conspicuous consumption and the acquisition of extraneous wealth--which is why the posted meme is just so apt.
Trump and Musk and Bro-culture trying to co-op Star Trek makes me angrier than the way that the Right has tried to lay claim to every visual expression of patriotism. I wouldn't mind wearing a Stars and Stripes t-shirt or something, but I don't want to look like Kid Rock.
