If the ocean becomes stagnant it stops absorbing oxygen altogether in some areas, creating aquatic deserts where nothing survives. Where pollution goes into the ocean, it will remain. Estuaries and wetlands would die out, as water recirculation is vital to their survival. There is absolutely no doubt that the death toll will be in the billions. The only question is if anyone can survive, and how many.

Another minor point no one ever seems to make even though it's so obvious that it's honestly painful:

The longer we wait, the more it will cost.
