It's not just the LA Times and WaPo holding back on a presidential endorsement [View all]
Went today to download the Tampa Bay Times recommendations for early voting and it was missing the Presidential and US Senate (Florida) receommendations. Come to find out, they aren't making them! If I have this right, they were only making recommendations on candidates the Editorial Board interviewed or on issues they have studied in depth. I mean, I don't need the Times to tell me how to vote on President or Senator, but I found this surprising. The recommendation list does help me with state, county and city races though as I do get murky on some of that and I value the Board's recommendations generally.
When I Googled why the Tampa Bay Times is not doing a Presidential endoresment, I found this article the Poynter Institute (a global nonprofit that strengthens democracy by improving the relevance, ethical practice and value of journalism) that explains this is happening elsewhere. It does cover newspapers who HAVE made the decision to stick with an endorement too.
Opinion | Why newspaper presidential endorsements have become an endangered species
The Washington Post. Los Angeles Times. The Minnesota Star Tribune. Tampa Bay Times. Gannett. McClatchy. Alden. The list grows by the day.
