a semi-private open trust project - it wasn't intended to make a profit, but rather serve a mission. However, it was a corporation run by a board of directors, most of whom felt that they couldn't afford to keeping it run privately, especially after Musk started waving around big money.

I think at this point the best thing that the US could do, perhaps in conjunction with other countries, is to build an open social media platform, something analogous to what NPR used to be before a Republlican Congress (more or less successfully) privatized it.

Then they can take the shambolic corpse of X-Twitter and hit it with so many fines that Musk sells it off.
