Look, our state voted for George Bush twice [View all]

Voted for both Bushes.

We just term limited ourselves away from a two term republican governor in my state. Now we have a progressive Black governor, and just elected one of two black women who will advance to the Senate, including retaining all of our progressive congressfolks.

Point is that politics ebbs and flows according to... who knows? But you have to keep playing to win.

I've weathered Nixon, Ford, Reagan, two Bushes, and now I'll hopefully live past the one term we have to deal with Trump.

I don't buy the proposition that elections are dead, but I suppose we'll fight that battle when it occurs. In fact, that's my most salient advice to folks who care deeply about our country and our politics.

Deal with these developments as they come, and do the best you can. Most importantly, stay in the fight. So many folks will present this as the absolute end, and admittedly, it can't be overstated what a serious emergency we're in.

But politics is often cyclical, and there will be an opportunity to change the balance of power in the national legislature in about 2 years, and the next presidential race will also begin in that space and time.

Don't despair. Take things as they come, and don't pile it all up on one plate and try and get it all down at once. Most importantly, take care of yourself, so you can be of maximum help. We'll fight things as they occur, so try to keep the anxiety at bay.

I know it's hard, but we can do this.
