A friend of mine has a teenage child with a long history of mental illness. This child has expressed serious suicidal ideation, and although my friend hasn't said as much, I get the sense there have been a couple of actual suicide attempts. My friend and her spouse have been working to get help for this child (in- and out-patient) for many years.
The number one predictor of whether someone thinking of suicide will actually act on those thoughts is the presence of a gun in the home.
Yes, guns can be secured. But intelligent adolescents are far too often able to get around those security measures. Desperation breeds cleverness. For my friend, a gun is just not a viable option.
I'm not anti-gun, and I'm not saying people - especially those who are at heightened physical danger because of last week's election - shouldn't consider being armed as one of several possible solutions. But it's not a workable solution for everyone.
