(6,803 posts)The kicker is that you need to practice. And practice, and practice, and practice, until it becomes automatic. It's not so much about marksmanship -- defensive encounters mostly take place at very short distances -- as it is about (a) safe handling (i.e. not shooting yourself) and (b) fast, decisive response.
I don't agree with those who say you should shoot without warning, and I don't think most district attorneys or juries would either. What I've been taught in defensive handgun classes is that you should give a very loud, angry, and distinct warning to make it clear that you are armed and will not hesitate to shoot. Scream "Get the fuck out of my house! I've got a gun! Get out! Get out! Get out!" -- something along those lines. Weapon-mounted lights and lasers are also effective at getting the message across. The blinding light in the face and the laser dot on the chest will support the verbal message.
This assumes, of course, that you have the time and distance to make the warning. If you are attacked suddenly and without warning, you are justified in responding in kind.
