Whether a veneer will work or a crown is needed depends on how much of the original tooth structure is intact. Crowns are usually necessary for teeth with extensive damage due to decay or trauma, but if teeth are all or mostly intact and you just want to make them look better, veneers can do the job for a fraction of the cost.
