(209 posts)run by a frail woman in her 80s named Dean, and buy a hard copy of the New York Times. Then I usually take it to one of the coffee shops in town, where I pore over the editorial pages and the front-section news stories, over coffee and a pastry or bagel. I don't consider this to be arduous or "hard work"--it's something I look forward to. (The writing of Peter Baker is a marvel.) I know there are many others who come into that news agency to buy their morning paper. But in the coffee shops, where townspeople mingle, I've never seen one morning paper reader--not one. Instead, they're on their phones. In the 1800s, newspapers were relatively rare, but citizens in the taverns passed them around like currency, arguing over their contents. Democracy dies in darkness? Maybe it also dies in the glow of a screen carrying social media.
