Too many American voters are voluntarily, or "self-inflictedly", uneducated about politics. It's not that they didn't go to school, necessarily, but they just don't take the effort to think critically about what they see on TV or social media. If they hear something they like, or it comes from a source they've decided they like, they fall for it hook, line, and sinker. Critical thinking is based on knowledge and logic, but too many voters don't think, they feel. Feeling is largely a matter of responding to your own lifelong inclinations, not processing new facts. Making important choices demands more consideration of the long-term consequences, intentional and unintentional, than most voters -- and especially eligible nonvoters -- are willing to make.
