in Eastern European countries such as Hungary and Czechoslovakia, during the Cold War. In current usage it generally means people who will support anything that russia or other authoritarian regimes do, if they can in any way try to view those regimes as "leftist" or anti-American. There are definitely right wing tankies too, such as Tucker Carlson or Tulsi Gabbard; people who think russia stands against "wokeness" or for "traditional values". They ALWAYS support the war against Ukraine, or at least try to justify it. They also hate NATO and the rules based international order.
